WHAT IS CHLAMYDIA?

Chlamydia is a bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. It is spread through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex, and can affect both men and women.

Most people with chlamydia have no symptoms, which is why it often goes undetected and untreated. When symptoms do occur, they can include unusual discharge, a burning sensation when urinating, and discomfort or swelling in the genitals.

Because chlamydia is easily missed without testing, it is one of the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted infections in Ireland.

CHLAMYDIA SYMPTOMS AND CARE

Symptoms and causes

Chlamydia is spread through unprotected sex and is caused by bacteria. Most people have no symptoms, but some may notice unusual discharge, burning when urinating, or genital discomfort. The only way to know for certain is to get tested.

Prevention

Using a condom correctly during sex is the most effective way to reduce your risk of chlamydia. Regular testing is also recommended if you have a new partner or multiple partners. It is one of the simplest ways to stay on top of your sexual health.

When to see a doctor

Book an appointment if you have symptoms, have been told by a partner that they have tested positive, or have had unprotected sex with a new partner. If you are unsure, getting tested is always the safest option.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CHLAMYDIA

Q1. How soon after sex can I get tested for chlamydia?
You can get tested for chlamydia most accurately two weeks (14 days) after having sex, though you should test immediately if you develop symptoms.
Q2. How long does it take to get chlamydia test results?
Results are returned within 7 working days. You will be notified once your results are ready.
Q3. How much does a chlamydia test cost at Nassau Clinic?
€150 covers your consultation with Dr. Liam and all laboratory samples. Antibiotic costs are paid separately at your chosen pharmacy.
Q4. I tested positive on an SH:24 home kit. Do I need to retest at the clinic?
Not necessarily. Dr Liam can review your SH:24 result and move directly to discussing treatment without requiring you to retest at the clinic.
Q5. What does chlamydia treatment involve?
If your results confirm a chlamydia infection, Dr Liam will prescribe the appropriate course of antibiotics. Your prescription is sent directly to your chosen pharmacy in Ireland.

Chlamydia is unlikely to clear without antibiotic treatment. Even if symptoms improve or disappear, the infection can remain and may still be passed to sexual partners. If you test positive, it is important to take the full course of antibiotics prescribed by Dr Liam.
Q7. What can happen if chlamydia is left untreated?
Untreated chlamydia can lead to serious health complications. In men, this can include pain and swelling in the testicles. In women, it can develop into pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which may cause pelvic pain, fever, and infertility.
